As we begin to enjoy the warm weather, employment solicitor, Paula Stuart, provides some tips for employers on how to be ready for the summer and avoid any misunderstandings in the workplace:

Top Tips

  • Introduce a Dress Code Policy to allow employees to wear more comfortable clothing in the warm weather but at the same time maintaining a professional image – this can remove the risk of shorts and flip flops in the office!
  • There is no legal obligation to provide air conditioning but have fans ready and available to use. They always get sold out when the hot weather is here!
  • Consider offering rest breaks for workers who may struggle more in the heat, for example those who are pregnant or who have a disability.
  • Monitor the temperature in the workplace. The law does not state a maximum temperature but the HSE recommends that ‘the temperature in all workplaces inside buildings shall be reasonable’ see for more details.
  • Open windows at the beginning of the day to let in cool air.
  • Use blinds and curtains to block out the sunlight.
